Rohit Sharma creates history, breaks huge record held by Virat Kohli

During the Mumbai Indians' high-scoring chase against Kolkata Knight Riders, Rohit Sharma delivered a knock to remember under pressure and completed his 50th half-century in the Indian Premier League. With a scorching 78 off just 39 balls, Rohit led the five-time champions from the front and put the KKR bowlers on the defensive as they chased a formidable 221 with five balls remaining. As a result, he became the fourth player in IPL history to hit 50 or more fifty-plus scores, behind Virat Kohli (72), David Warner (66), and Shikhar Dhawan (53).

Rohit's knock against the Knights, which included six fours and as many sixes, helped him break Virat Kohli’s long-standing record. He now is the batter to score most runs against one team in IPL history. Rohit has scored 1161 runs in 36 IPL matches against KKR while playing for two teams – Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians.

Ryan Rickelton turned out to be the ideal partner for the former MI captain, as the two put up an incredible opening stand of 148 runs, the most for the Mumbai Indians against KKR in IPL history. Their aggressive approach placed MI well in control of the chase and far ahead of the needed rate. Ajinkya Rahane's (67) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi's (51) outstanding half-centuries helped KKR post a commanding 220 for 4 earlier in the match. On a flat surface, the total appeared difficult despite some late control from MI's bowlers.

However, Rohit's fluid strokeplay made the target appear much less menacing. He raced to his historic fifty in style with a combination of timing and power, taking on both pace and spin. Anukul Roy's outstanding fielding performance, in which he sprinted backwards to complete a crisp catch to ultimately break the dangerous opening partnership, and ended his innings.
